ACUPUNTURE
Neoclassical Acupuncture is a contemporary approach developed by Dr. Slate Burris and influenced by the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
One of its distinguishing features is its minimal approach. Rather than routinely using multiple needles, treatment may involve only one or a small number of carefully selected points.
Palpation forms an important part of the assessment. I use this hands-on approach alongside your consultation to guide point selection and create an individualised treatment tailored to you.
What does this mean for you?
Treatment is gentle, focused and highly individualised. Your first appointment gives us time to discuss your health, lifestyle and reasons for seeking acupuncture before deciding on the most appropriate approach for you.
Why do people come to Acusana?
People seek acupuncture for many different reasons. At Acusana, I have a particular interest in women’s health and wellbeing, while also welcoming patients seeking support in other areas.

Stress & Wellbeing
Some people choose acupuncture as part of looking after their wellbeing during periods of stress or when they are finding it difficult to switch off and relax.
Musculoskeletal Pain
Acupuncture is also commonly sought by people experiencing musculoskeletal pain and tension.
Headaches & Migraines
I also see patients seeking acupuncture as part of the management of recurrent headaches and migraines.
Every treatment plan is individualised following a detailed consultation.
GUA SHA THERAPY
Gua Sha is a traditional East Asian therapy that involves gently stroking the skin with a smooth-edged therapeutic tool. It is commonly used alongside acupuncture to help ease muscular tension and promote a sense of relaxation and wellbeing.
The term Gua Sha comes from the Chinese words gua, meaning “to scrape” or “stroke”, and sha, referring to the temporary red or purple marks that can sometimes appear on the skin following treatment.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the appearance of sha is traditionally understood in relation to stagnation of Qi and Blood. From a modern physiological perspective, Gua Sha produces temporary changes in the superficial tissues and local circulation.
Why might Gua Sha be used?
I may incorporate Gua Sha into a treatment where appropriate, particularly for:
- muscular tightness and tension
- neck, shoulder and back discomfort
- supporting relaxation and general wellbeing
- complementing an individual acupuncture treatment
The marks produced by Gua Sha can resemble bruising but are caused by the treatment technique and usually fade naturally over several days. I will always explain what to expect before treatment and ensure Gua Sha is appropriate for you.
COSMETIC FACIAL ACUPUNTURE
Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture is a natural, non-toxic, anti-ageing treatment known to be highly effective in addressing fine lines, wrinkles and other skin issues.
Body points will also be included during the session, as in Chinese Medicine skin issues often arise from internal organ imbalances. Therefore when the health and wellbeing improves, the skin does too.
From a scientific point of view, when the needles are inserted, the fibroblast cells are stimulated and this enhances the production of collagen and elastin, two important proteins that naturally reduce as we age.
Needles are inserted in the ears, body and face.
During a treatment other tools can be used in conjunction to acupuncture, such as: Gua Sha, cupping, facial massage, natural skincare and LED light therapy.
GUA SHA REJUVENATION
If you’re scared of needles, try experiencing Gua Sha for a relaxing way to tone, lift, plump and bring the youthful glow of vitality to your skin and face.
This rejuvenating non-invasive facial treatment gives the complexion an instant glow. Face Gua Sha, Bo Jin and Cupping, when performed in the TCM style, gives you big results in facial sculpting, lifting and even subtle reshaping for a more youthful, glowing appearance.
